Own your subtext.

Because I have two 12-year-olds in the house, we have A LOT of energy circulating around.  Lots of emotions, lots of big conversations, and lots of tone or subtext that’s floating in the abyss. Which makes conversations and underlying assumptions a bit… interesting.

Now I’m a big believer in transparent communication, I feel like you gotta own your subtext. If you’re in a bad mood and use a grouchy tone, own it. If you’re trying to say something without really saying it, take a breath and try again… with a little more clarity.

Subtext, or the things we’re implying but not really saying, can make a mess of communication. And if we’re being honest, it can look a whole lot of passive-aggressive. When you’re not saying something directly with your words but you’re sure as heck saying it with your tone or body language, it can make communication feel really unsafe.

But when you own your subtext, you end up being a lot more responsible for what you’re saying AND not saying.

And it makes communication tremendously more successful.

So when you’re hurt, frustrated, or upset, say something about it and I guarantee your communication will be much easier to navigate… together.

You got this,
