Use Your Words

My kids' fifth grade school year is turning out to be a tough one. They’re managing it the best they can, but it’s a lot harder work, tons of tests, and a different pace of learning.

Between the weekly spelling, state abbreviations, and vocabulary tests, my head is spinning. For someone who is geographically challenged, helping quiz them on state locations and capitals has really upped my trivial pursuit game. But the one that has me really digging deep is vocabulary. I’m not usually a person that uses giant words to make my point, but when you’re quizzing your kids on the definitions of their weekly vocab words, you sure are reminded of all of the meanings of words.

And it’s not just your 5th grade Friday quiz day that is important here.

It’s also really important in your relationship.

You see, your words have great power.  They can be used to inspire, encourage, and reassure. They can also be used to criticize, shame, and cut down.

Believe me, you don’t need a wickedly smart 5th grader in your life to remind you of the power of your words.

My encouragement to you this week is to remember that…

Your words have great power. Use them intentionally.

Use them to share gratitude.
Use them to speak kindness to one another.
Use them to repair and forgive.
Use them intentionally.

I know I’m taking extra care to do the same.

Until next week,

-A
