Here's How to Heal Pain and Mistakes

My kids got attacked by horse flies at my daughter’s soccer practice the other week.

This sounds quite dramatic I know.

But you should have seen their poor legs.  Literally covered in bites, that only got more swollen, itchy, and concerning over the course of a few days.  I’ve never seen anything quite like it.

And boy, did we try everything to bring relief.  Lavender, vapor rub, cortisone cream, Benadryl, ice, cool compresses.  You name it and it was recommended to us.  Who knows what exact right combination of balms worked, but after a few days, the misery subsided and healing began to take place.

As much as I wish I knew the secret ointment to bring instant relief, it felt pretty helpless to see them in pain and not being able to do much to soothe them.

And I think this same thing can happen in love. We can be hurting or know our partner is hurting and not sure of what to do to ease the pain or make the mistakes disappear.

Which is why I think it’s such an important reminder to share that…

Two of the most powerful healing balms are empathy and patience.

You may not know the secret recipe to ease the pain or relieve the hurting, but applying empathy and patience does help to soothe what needs to be healed in love.

Taking the time to hear feelings and be patient in the repair really is a beautiful and powerful balm to injuries in your relationship.

Use this reminder as a way to apply just the perfect combination of empathy and patience to whatever the two of you are walking through right now. I know it can help to soothe.

Until next week,

P.S. If your attempts to heal feel invalidated and rushed, please reach out for support. I don’t want the two of you walking through something alone when a guide could really help.
