How are you at slowing down?
For a fast talker and quick on my feet sort of gal, I have to work deliberately to sloooowww down when it comes to communication.
I also wear my heart on my sleeve, so let’s just say I can be a real mess when it comes to navigating emotional conversations.
The combo of fast-talking, quick (aka reactive) thinking, and feeling most of my emotions BIG, I’m constantly working to….
Perfect the art of the pause.
what you actually want to say, and not mixing up feelings vs. thoughts.
But I think there are some less than obvious reasons why perfecting the art of the pause is so powerful to our relationships.
When we pause, we’re moving into an observing role. We’re slowing down to take in ALL the information, not just the stuff that we glance at as we whiz by. Pausing allows us to notice both our physical and emotional responses. It helps us be aware of not only what we want/need to say, but also HOW to say it.
I encourage you to keep working to perfect the art of the pause. I know for me, it’s been a huge game-changer… and also quite humbling when I pause long enough to realize that how I saw it was NOT necessarily accurate. And oh so grateful that I paused first!
I’m cheering for you!
