Don't Wait for an Occasion to Celebrate!

My favorite thing about calling to make reservations at a nicer restaurant (back when we did those sorts of things) is when the host asks, “Is there anything special you’ll be celebrating when you join us?”

For whatever reason this question always makes me panic a bit.

Eeek, am I supposed to say anniversary or birthday?
Is there some sort of occasion that has recently passed or is on the horizon that I could use as our “reason” for dining out?

And then I just go blank and usually say “um, well, we’re celebrating leaving the house and being together without our kids?!?”.

And it’s basically as eloquent as that.

Lord, help me and my awkwardness.

The truth is, leaving the house without kids in tow IS a celebration. So is slowing down at the end of a long week… or month… to look each other in the eyes and sincerely ask, “how are you?”.

Heck, I think any excuse, reason, justification that allows the two of you to take some time for each other is a celebration in and of itself.

You don’t need a “reason” to celebrate, because the work of doing life together IS reason enough.

And yes, I realize that today is Valentine’s Day and my greatest hope for you is that you…

Don’t wait for an occasion to celebrate your relationship… find everyday reasons to rejoice.

Get into the regular practice of spending time together, just because. It does wonders for the two of you and your connection.

Now get to celebrating!

Until next week,

-A

P.S. If celebrating, rejoicing or even the idea of sustained connection sounds overwhelming, please reach out for support. I don’t want the two of you to stay stuck any longer than you already have.
