Yelling Will Not Get You Heard!

Remember the old cell phone commercials where people would have a bad connection and all they did was wander around, shouting into their phone, “Can you hear me now??!?”.  Well, I do. And we all got a good chuckle out of it while also relating to the infuriating experience of trying to get your message across with little success.

If I’m being honest, I see this same phenomenon happen in my therapy office.  Couples who are trying their hardest to communicate, but all they’re doing to try and be heard is raising the volume while saying the same thing over and over.

Look, I get how frustrating it is to not be heard, especially when you’re trying your best to communicate. But I can tell you, with absolute certainty, that saying the same thing louder and louder WILL NOT get you heard.

Take some time to troubleshoot your communication this week. Look at what’s NOT working and make the necessary adjustments.

Because saying the same thing louder does NOT improve communication.

You got this,
