Why assume when you can ask?

Assumptions are such a relationship downer.

I mean, if I could count how many times I’ve gotten tripped up in my own marriage by assuming versus asking, I’d have run out of fingers and toes a long time ago. And I’m supposed to know better.

Well, I do know better, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that I always do better.

Yes, assumptions are there for a reason. They’re actually a powerful way you make sense of the world. Assumptions can be helpful when you’re trying to figure something out or when information is missing. They’re even helpful when it comes to problem-solving or making sense of some confusion.

But any helpfulness they offer is pretty much undercut by all the heartache and angst they cause in relationships.

Because sadly, the more you assume, the less you really know.

So, what would it be like if you…

Ditched your assumptions and asked questions instead?

What could communication look like for the two of you if you always asked first?

What if you used any sign of confusion as an opportunity to ask for more information and finally stopped filling in the blanks?

Wow, could things look really different!

And that is my encouragement to you this week…

Ditch the assumptions in love and just ask!!

I know it’s always a helpful reminder for me and I hope the same is true for the two of you.

Until next week,

-A
